I thought I wouldn't have to deal with multi-threading but right away you realize the bot has to avoid blocking when dealing with multiple people sending commands at the same time. On those 10,000 person Discords, I'm sure they use c++.

that seems a weird design, I'd have assumed they would spin up a new instance for each request

No I think it is standard network programming. Just like an http server has to create a thread per user or else the page load would be blocked.
